Revelation 2:14 – But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

In Facing Obstacles, I mentioned that the adult Israelites who came out of Egypt failed to enter the Promised Land because they had not made themselves prepared by desiring to obey God, but the next generation ultimately succeeded because they had been raised in a culture of obedience to God through Moses, Aaron, and Joshua in the desert. The subject of this devotional is why such preparation was necessary, and is still needed today for every Christian every day of our lives. The reason: the inevitable attacks of the enemy!

In the movie “Woman Thou Art Loosed” there is the excellent exchange of lines: “I think people give the devil too much credit” followed by the response “I don’t think that people give him enough.” They are both right. We give Satan and his kingdom too much credit – indeed scapegoat him – when we disobey God and then blame Satan for the consequences. Satan is not responsible for our self – control. No matter how much pressure Satan puts on us, our decisions are still on our own. We have the right to say no to sin. Also, we even have a say in how much pressure Satan can put on us! First off, the Bible says “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Resisting the devil does not mean fighting in your own will, for we contend not against flesh and blood, but fighting with the power of the name of Jesus Christ using spiritual warfare. We can command the demons that are attacking and tempting us to go in the name of Jesus Christ! We also have the option of limiting our own temptations. We need to stop doing the things that we used to do. Even if they are not sins, if they have the appearance of sin or can lead to sin, they are wrong. For instance, there may be nothing intrinsically wrong with watching television. But if you watch too much, you will get bored and start channel – surfing, and soon you will see something that you are not supposed to. Further, so long as we are under the secret place of the most high – a place that we get to only by obeying our God – Satan cannot touch us.

On the other hand, people are unaware of just how determined and wily Satan is. Because of his vanity, resentment, bitterness, selfishness, rebelliousness, and hate, Satan is determined to wage his war against God despite knowing that it is futile. He knows that he cannot touch God or his angels, so he does his best to destroy as many men, the image of God, as he can. His only goal is to make sure that as many people share his eternal fate as he possibly can, and the suffering and chaos that he and those under his control cause while pursuing that goal is merely their sick idea of small pleasure; a mere distraction. Also, while Satan is powerless against God and those who seek his protection, he nonetheless still has plenty of weapons at his disposal. One of those is time. Another is knowledge. Another is an immense army of demons and humans who are under his control. And another is the relatively limited attention span, knowledge, and perspective of all humans but a tiny number of radically dedicated Christians. Using those, Satan and his “helpers” are able create occurrences and conditions in your life designed to cause you to fall. And he gets started even before you are born. An example? Moses and Jesus. Satan entered into the hearts of pharaoh and Herod, motivating them to kill all the male children. More to the point, Satan tried to kill Moses PRECISELY BECAUSE he knew that God would use him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Why? Because Satan knew that Jesus Christ would come out of the nation of Israel to die for the sins that we are born in through Adam, to give us victory over Satan and access into God and Heaven through this same Jesus Christ!

And this brings us to the children of Israel at the wall of Jericho. Now recall that the first time the children of Israel went to enter Canaan, there was no wall there. Why? There did not need to be. All Satan had to do was tempt the minds of the children of Israel to rebel. The children of Israel embraced Satan with a bear – hug and missed that opportunity for a blessing. Satan’s hope was that God would destroy Israel and start all over with Moses, thereby delaying the First Coming of the Messiah by a millennia or two. But Moses interceded for Israel and caused God to turn his wrath. Satan DID succeed in delaying Israel’s possession of Canaan for 40 years, but that created a new problem! God was going to slay the rebellious generation that came out of Egypt and replace them with those who would grow up knowing and expecting to obey him. So the NEXT time they came to possess the land, he would not be able to use the same tactic.

So Satan went right to work. He motivated the pagan people then inhabiting Canaan – after all everyone who does not worship God worships and is controlled by Satan – to build the wall to keep the children of Israel out! Satan knew that they were coming back, he knew WHEN they were coming back, and made sure that HIS PEOPLE WERE READY! And that was not all. Right before the children of Israel were to go march on Canaan, he made one big attack aimed at Moses. He did what Moses had long become weary of – provoked the children of Israel to complain and question God – and did so when Moses was vulnerable, while he was still mourning his sister Miriam and brother Aaron. So Moses lost his temper – a weakness – and disobeyed God, who in turn forbad him from leading him into the Promised Land. So Satan’s attacks succeeded in delaying the children of Israel long enough to get the Canaanites to build a wall and to finally get Moses removed as leader. (Even after Moses died, Satan tried to steal his body and cause a revolt!)

But it failed. Even without Moses leading, even with a wall in the way, and even with the giants and strong warriors on the other side, the children of Israel prevailed. Why? Because they did not give up like their fathers and mothers did. They did not lose their faith. They obeyed God and pressed on. They obeyed God, pressed on, inherited the Promised Land, and got their blessing. Why? Because when the attacks came, when they faced the obstacles, they were already prepared … trained and tested by God by 40 years of living under the law led by Moses with God weeding out all the bad apples and delivering them from the hands of a number of pagan peoples along the way.

Why? Because Satan has no REAL POWER! Every time he goes up against God or one of God’s anointed, he fails! So tempting the children of Israel, getting the pagan Canaanites to build the wall, even getting Moses to enter into temptation and get removed, those were not devised to defeat the children of Israel. Why bother? Satan knew that he could not defeat the children of the Living God; that it would be a waste of time even to try. Satan did not do all those things to defeat them – which was impossible – he did all those things to GET THEM TO GIVE UP WITHOUT TRYING. And that was very possible! After all, he did succeed the first time! And it still is possible, and the Body of Christ continues to oft rebel, give up, and refuse to knock down their walls of Jericho, enter their Promised Land, and claim their territory in the name of their God to this day, both on the wide scale AND on personal levels.

Why? Because the Body of Christ has not sought God with all our hearts. We do not live to please God. Instead, we live to satisfy ourselves. We do not even PRETEND to be doing things for God most of the time. Instead, we seek pleasure and personal fulfillment. We do not even PRETEND to live under the authority of God most of the time. Instead, we try to rule ourselves, or we are content to have kings – or in this day and age governments – tell us what to do. We do not even PRETEND to go God when we need help. Instead, we call upon our human institutions. And we do not even PRETEND to acknowledge God’s domain and power. Instead, we rely on our own explanations and descriptions of the world, and we try to solve spiritual problems by carnal means, with drugs, self – help programs, counseling, “education”, money, etc. Instead of seeking positive Christian influences, we violate Psalm 1:1!

And most of the rest of the time, we PRETEND indeed! We say we are doing things for God, but we are really doing only what makes us happy and is easy. Some of us have no problem giving in the offering because we are wealthy, but do not ask us to volunteer time! Others will contribute time, but only what we like to do and are good at, and only if they allow us to do it the way we want to (i.e. I will sing in the choir but not teach Sunday school, and even then only if I get to sing lead or direct every now and then.) We will also help others, but often only those who look like us or those whose issues we can personally sympathize with or relate to. Love our enemies!?!? Forget it!!! And a lot of things we do “for God” is really for and at the direction of the church, the religion, the denomination, the culture, or the tradition and has nothing to do with God at all and certainly is not motivated by God personally speaking to your heart. You have the “prayer” portion of service where everyone stands and recites the prayer printed on the program. How many repeat it without REALLY reading it? And for how many people is that the only prayer they say that week, outside of the same bedtime prayer that they have been repeating for decades? No matter what your works, if it is not done with a sincere desire to seek and please God, God will not smile on it. As a matter of fact, you would be better off not doing it!

And we have gotten so complacent in our prosperous, modern society that we do not even seek God over our problems. With our medicines, economic systems, science, and philosophy, we think that we do not need him on a day – to – day basis. But if you do not consult with God on “the little stuff”, what makes you think that you are going to be able to heal the sick, raise the dead, or part the Red Sea when disaster strikes? Even if you have the mindset to pray … and most don’t do anything but an obligatory recitation – if that – even if they have plenty of time … it takes faith. It takes a connection with God. It takes a love of God. It takes a heart with a desire to seek God. It takes thorough knowledge of The Word. It takes being free of evil spirits. It takes having renounced bad habits. It takes PREPARATION.

God is all powerful, true. But you are not. Don’t think that you can go from being a carnal lukewarm Christian to someone who can win battles and move mountains in 60 seconds. Before you can use the power of God to do the will of God, you have to respect that power; respect the one who gives the power and who IS the power. Otherwise, not only will you not be able to do the will of God, you will not even know what the will of God IS! Why? Because you will not know what the will of God is unless God tells you himself AND you receive it!

Obstacles are coming in your life. Do not kid yourself. Do not believe those who claim that being a Christian means smooth sailing, peace, and joy. That happens when we get to HEAVEN. On Earth, the converse is true: Satan specifically attacks Christians because he already has everyone else. Everyone else is doing the will of Satan while they are alive, helping destroy other people and ultimately themselves. Why would Satan mess with what is for him a good thing? No, Satan will come after you. Even if he can’t get you to forfeit your soul and inheritance, he will settle for keeping you from helping somebody else. He will settle for getting you to stop healing the land! He will settle for stopping you from inheriting the territory that God wants to use to raise up a new generation of warriors! As alluded to earlier, God’s plans won’t be stopped. If you won’t do it, God will use someone else. But that creates delays which Satan will use to go after other people even if he can’t get you! That is the difference between God and Satan. With Satan, it is never personal because it is always really all about him. But with God it is ALWAYS personal … God has a personal interest in your well – being and salvation and wants you to spend eternity with him!

So start preparing for those obstacles today. Even if you are in the midst of a storm right now (and even if you were not prepared when it came and still aren’t prepared for it) then just count it all for joy and start getting ready for the next one! Just know that all you have to do is obey and your God will always deliver for you.

Prayer:Father God in the name of Jesus Christ, please mold me, make me ready to face and overcome the next obstacle and any obstacle that comes in my life. Help me to be able to hold up my brother/sister in Christ when they face their obstacles lest they fall, and to intercede for those who have not yet found you with what they are going through. Please remove from me anything that is keeping me from being ready to meet these challenges and overcome them in your name. Please give me a heart to do your will and a desire to seek and please you all the days of my life. Please give me faith that all the attacks of the enemy are just smokescreens designed to trick me into giving up without trying, and help me to remember that Satan has no power over me so long as I remain truly obedient to you. May my garments be made white in the blood of Jesus Christ and remain so forever. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
