FACING OBSTACLES

Leviticus 19:14 – And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people.

Recall the story of Joshua leading the children of Israel into Canaan, the Promised Land. Right when it seemed that they were finally going to possess the great blessing that God had in store for them, what did they encounter? A huge wall designed to keep them out; a seemingly insurmountable barrier. Needless to say, many probably saw that wall and felt like giving up. Many perhaps thought that God was making things too hard on them. Many wanted to believe but did not know how because they did not see the way. Many probably thought that either Moses or Joshua had either lied to them or misled them. Others perhaps thought that God was incapable of giving them the victory because of the size of the challenge. (While a wall may not seem like much of a challenge in our modern civilization, realize that the Great Wall of China protected that nation for centuries!)

Now it is a good thing that God forced the children of Israel to wander in the wilderness of Sin – as it was literally named after pagan gods by the predecessors to the modern Muslims who inhabited the area – until all of the adults who came up out of Egypt died. The adults who came up out of Egypt were so fearful, selfish, stubborn, and rebellious that they attempted to stone Moses and go back to Egypt merely because they would have had to fight giants and strong warriors to possess the land. Imagine what would have happened had they seen that they needed to cross a wall and THEN fight the giants? These people had forgotten how God had delivered them out of Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and given them victory in battle. They did not consider that God could do those things again.

More than anything, it was not what they were expecting. They had not sought God for themselves or attempted to have pure, loving hearts toward God. All they knew was that they had been told that they were going to the Promised Land. They thought that they would be able to just waltz right in. But the instant they faced an unexpected challenge, they turned their back on God. The amazing thing is that they did it because they wanted to. They did not even WANT to ask God for help. They wanted to be in control. They felt that God was obligated to deliver them into the Promised Land according to a manner that suited them. But when they faced the unexpected, they became angry. They did not want to give up control or seek help. They did not like being surprised, did not want to be in position to not know the answer.

That is why they were so quick to worship idols. If you are an idolator, you make the idol yourself after the manner that you want it to look. And if you seek advice of it, you hear what you want to hear. If you succeed, you credit yourself for making an idol of your own choosing. If you fail, you blame the idol. The children of Israel did not want to be in a position where they HAD to obey God or anyone else; a God who could not fail. They did not want the responsibility of failure, knowing that since they served a God that did not fail, all failure was due to their own failure to obey. They wanted credit for their own success but to lay the blame for all failure on someone else. So God slew them all in the desert and raised up a generation that knew only following. If they were not following God, then at least they knew to follow those who did follow God in Moses and Joshua. For that reason, there was no record of any rebellion of the type that Moses had to continually face when Joshua encountered the wall.

The reason why they succeeded where their parents failed was because unlike their parents, they were ready to meet the challenge. They had gone through a long process of learning to obey and removing the negative influences – the people who came out of Egypt and only knew slavery – from their midst. Again, it is appropriate that the wilderness that they were wandering in was literally called the wilderness of Sin, because we have to go through the same thing. We are born in sin. We have to go through a long process of learning to obey. We have to learn to seek God. We have to learn how to obey God. We have to learn how to love God. And we also have to learn the proper motivation: because he is God and not because we want something from him or even because we fear death and the lake of fire. We have to realize how much God loves us, and that he is in fact love itself – in addition to power itself and justice itself – and so not only is there no sense in departing from his commandments, but that obeying them is the only thing that is acceptable to us. And then we have to be delivered from all of the evil spirits, all of the bad thoughts, all of the bad habits, and all of the negative influences – including but certainly not limited to people – in our lives. It is only after we go through that process that we are ready to overcome the inevitable challenge from Babylon – Satan and his kingdom – that will come whenever we are just about to get what God wants us to have. Now Satan knows this already, so not only will you face opposition when you get to the wall, you will face opposition on the way there. Satan tried continuously to scatter and break the children of Israel to keep them from ever getting to the wall, tempting them to defy Moses and provoke God and sending hostile armies into battle with them. But thanks to the leadership of Joshua and Moses, they overcame it all and got to the wall, and furthermore they shouted at the Wall of Jericho and it came tumbling down!

Even after the wall fell, there were still other battles to fight. And that is the way it is for us also. Do not kid yourself. It is never going to stop until either you die or until Jesus Christ comes back. But the question is on what level are you going to fight? Are you going to refuse to go up to the Wall of Jericho and spend your life fighting in the desert? Or are you going to knock the wall down at the direction of and with the power of God and go where the REAL fight is?

And that what healing the land is all about. If you spend your life fighting in the desert, your children (meaning literally any natural children that you have plus those who follow you in Christ) are going to inherit that same battle. Maybe your children will go knock down the wall. Maybe they will not. Either way, that at least one more generation of unnecessary suffering. That is at least one more generation that the return of Jesus Christ is delayed! Or YOU can follow God and go knock down that wall and go in and possess the land, and then go and fight and win other battles in the land that you possess. That way, your children will already be in Canaan when they join the fight, and will be able to advance on from there. That way, a lot more people get introduced to the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and so there is less loneliness, violence, drug addiction, crime, greed, pornography, disease, suicide, and wars. And that way, we march that much closer to the Valley Of Decision, the final confrontation between good and evil that Jesus Christ will win just as certainly as he won the first time when he defeated Satan on the cross and again when he rose again.

So fight on. Knock down the wall that is keeping you back. Possess that education. Possess that job. Possess that church. Possess that marriage. Possess those children (whether natural or adopted or foster). Possess that ministry. Possess being not only debt free but being a lender and not a borrower. Possess good health. Possess having the gifts and fruits of the spirit and using them. Possess getting the people in your family saved. Possess getting your friends, co – workers, and neighbors saved. Possess getting your ENEMY saved. Possess obeying Jesus Christ and ministering to the poor, the homeless, and the prison inmates. Knock down the walls of fear, doubt, selfishness. The walls of religion, doctrine, tradition, and culture. The walls of racism, hatred, self – righteousness, and poverty. The walls of jealousy, usury, cheating, lies, idolatry, and hard – heartedness. Get yourself ready. Get delivered from those demons, especially those generational curses and demons that have afflicted your family. Do not let those generational curses afflict your kids, or the people who take over your church, or the people who move into your house. Get out of those sinful behaviors and appearances. Stop making it harder for your kids and the other people who are watching you looking to see how a Christian is supposed to conduct himself. Quit worrying about what people think about you and start asking God what HE thinks about you.

Quit worrying about your bills and start having faith that God will provide your bills. You have had those same bills for 20 years and still haven’t paid them off. And you know what? Your parents had those same bills. Their parents had those same bills. Their parents had their same bills. And so on. Don’t you realize that you have a generational curse affecting your finances? No matter how many bills you pay, no matter how much you make or save, no matter how you try to discipline yourself, no matter how many consumer credit counseling and money management seminars you take, you are still going to have those bills! So pay those tithes, give in the offering, get down on your knees, and start being obedient, faithful, and content with what you have so God can deliver you from that generational curse! That way, not only will you not have to worry about those bills anymore, but your kids will not inherit them! Your church will not inherit them! You will go from being a borrower to a lender! Your kids will go from being borrowers to lenders! Your church or ministry will go from being a borrower to a lender! And we will be that much closer to healing the land; that much closer to bringing Jesus back!

So do not delay. Please start getting yourself ready to face and OVERCOME those obstacles today!

Prayer:Father in the name of Jesus Christ, please ready me to face my obstacles. Please ready my family to face these obstacles. Please ready my neighbors, co – workers, friends, and church to face these obstacles. Please ready the entire body of Christ to face these obstacles. Please Lord give us faith, a heart to do your will, a desire to seek you, and a love for you that surpasses that of any and all others including ourselves. Please Lord make us willing to fight and overcome in your name, and not those who want to sit on the sidelines, not those who wants everything to be handed to us, not those who want everything to go as we think that they should. Please Lord when we come up against the obstacles, may we not run away from them but rather run TOWARDS you, knowing that you will always deliver us. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen!
