THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY LIE

Posted by Job on March 1, 2007

John 1:17 – For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

I once had a heavy personal investment in right wing politics. One of our favorite idioms was “personal responsibility for your actions.” It meant that a person had to bear the whole cost of anything that he or she did wrong; even decades after the event, and to expect no help from anyone else. It also meant that a person should bear the burden of whatever unfairness he or she might experience and make the best of it with no bitterness or complaining, even if the unfairness was systemic. So, our proclamation to minorities and the poor in response to whatever hardship and injustice that they faced in their lives was “take personal responsibilities for your action and your life!” And yes, it was even OK to make the family members and children of such misfortunate folk to suffer not only the consequences of the misbehavior of others, but also to subject them to the same systemic injustices. It was considered the right, moral way to do things; the way to a prosperous happy successful society – especially for those with the resources to easily abide the consequences of their own bad choices and particularly those who did not suffer systemic injustices. The best (or worst depending upon your sense of irony) part is that the most ardent espousers of this “personal responsibility” philosophy was the “religious right”; certain Christians. This ordinarily would be one instance about whom critics of the religious right would say that they are neither religious nor right. The critics are half right and half wrong, for the religious right is both very religious and very WRONG.

Keep in mind: religion is not of God. Religion was created by man to serve man’s purposes. So naturally, men who lack Godly forms of charity in their heart are going to introduce false doctrine and false teaching into religion that justifies the lack of charity, just as they do in other institutions such as education, law, family, and the workplace. Anything that allows you to sit back and enjoy your relatively comfortable lifestyle, to hoard up your material substance for yourself, and to harden your heart to those less fortunate, it is very easy for one to listen to all those lying demons and come up with all sorts of creative and corrupt justifications, theories, and practices for it.
The next time that you hear someone declaring the “personal responsibility” mantra, challenge them! Ask them “What if God held you personally responsible for YOUR actions?” If the person does not know Christ, then you have just opened up an ideal evangelism and proselytizing opportunity. If the person DOES know Christ, then by the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, you have convicted them in their own hearts hardened by religion and its pernicious demonic effect on our culture. For if God held us personally responsible, we would all be doomed to eternity in the lake of fire. But instead, God sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ just so that we would NOT be held personally responsible for our actions. Why? Because God loves us. He wants us to be in Heaven with Him! It is not His Will that any man perish! So God sent The Redeemer to die for all of our sins so that we could be saved from responsibility for our actions – no matter what they were – by grace.

And recall: we are to be like God. After all, are not Christians – or Believers – “followers of Christ”? Is not Christ God, part of the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost? So, as God showed mercy, we are to also. Just as it is God’s Will that no one perish in the lake of fire, it should be our desire that no one suffer poverty, endure injustice, or be demeaned or humiliated, or serve long prison sentences for minor crimes. And we are certainly not to consign children and the elderly to miserable lives just because of the mistakes of their parents and children. That is not God’s Way, and it should not be our way.

Do not mistake this as a plea for more government social spending. Nay, it is the Body of Christ that needs to learn to stand up and begin to show charity, love, and mercy unto those who need it. Did not Christ tell us to visit the prisoners, feed the hungry, and clothe the naked? Did He not warn that those who failed to do so would receive the lake of fire? Why do Christians not think that this applies to THEM? This does not apply to SINNERS, to UNBELIEVERS! In Matthew 25:34-50, it referred to people who had done great works in the name of Christ, even healing and casting out devils! But Christ let them know that despite all that, if you do not have and show charity (meaning love); if you do not love your neighbor and your enemy, then though you might claim Christ’s Name you truly do not have Christ in you, and you will suffer the same punishment as everyone who never claimed Christ. God is Love, and if you do not have Love you are not part of God through the Body of Christ. And an integral part of love is mercy, compassion, and forgiveness.

We are to show mercy, compassion, and forgiveness on the criminals, drug addicts, prostitutes, single mothers, idlers, beggars, uneducated, and spendthrifts (and their children). Jesus Christ told us to not only have sympathy and to help the less fortunate, but to ADVOCATE for them, to argue their case before the authorities and the people, to exhort everyone to show mercy, compassion, and forgiveness! A lot of people take this to believe that we are only supposed to exhibit this behavior to those who deserve it: to moral people and members of the church. A thousand times no! Jesus Christ Himself said that He did not come for those who were well! People who were well do not need a doctor but those who are sick! Christ came for the sick, meaning the unsaved! So we are not to reserve this behavior to saved people on their way to Heaven, or to stable moral people who do not need a hand up (unless it is a spiritual one to get saved)! We are to extend this behavior to those who need it most! That is the opposite of what religion tells you, which is to first help nobody but yourself and those like or attached to you, but if you just cannot escape your guilt and must help SOMEBODY then help someone who “deserves it” by exhibiting good character. Again, that is the opposite of what God is. God did not send Jesus Christ to save you because you deserved it and had good character. If you deserved it and had good character, you would have never needed a Savior! God sent Christ for you because you did not deserve it, because of your bad character! Because spiritually you were a murderer, a molester, a thief, an adulterer, a vagrant, a drug addict, a deadbeat, everything that you now cast judgment upon!

Now perhaps the “give at the office” thing is the minimum that is required. But God did not do the minimum. God did more by dying on the cross and then raising from the dead. So, as God did more than the minimum in the form of Jesus Christ, we must do more than the minimum. We must get personally involved with these people. We must encourage them, help them, show them to change their ways. Yes, you will get disappointed. Yes, you will get taken advantage of. Yes, you will get hurt. But did not Jesus Christ suffer these same things? Was He not betrayed by Judas Iscariot? Are you better than Christ that you do not have to suffer these things also? And do you not recall that whatever you go through on earth will be counted as your store on earth and in Heaven? I would not imagine that such notions are taught in these religious churches.

You have to realize where this comes from. It comes from the desire to justify the few living off the many by telling them that there is some sort of righteousness in working to death for no pay. Do you not know that God ordained the Sabbath as a day during which man does no servile (meaning for economic gain) labor? Did not Paul give The Word of God in Romans 4:4 which said “Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt”? There is no profit in economic exploitation for the exploited; there is no profit in systemic injustice for those who suffer it! There is only corrupt earthly reward for who does the exploiting and who benefits from the injustice! The economic exploitation and the racism that allowed a few to live deliciously, just as the whore of Babylon lives deliciously, drunk off the blood of the saints. Well, Babylon’s judgment is coming, and you had better make sure that you are not a part of it. But the churches and the religious system that ran them were part and parcel of the economic exploitation and systemic injustice. The economic exploitation meant more money for the church, and supporting the systemic injustice, allowing some people to believe that they were better than others, made them more willing to give. And the exploited and oppressed? Who cares? They didn’t have any money to give to the church anyway. About them it was said that they somehow deserved their fate: that they had sinned or their parents had sinned, or even that they were the cursed seed of Ham.

James 15 – 16 says “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” Well, we have been telling people to “be warm and full” without giving them meat, clothing, shelter, or even the means to provide for themselves, and instead tell them to “be good Christians” or to “be patriotic.” It is right there in God’s Word; do you not understand? Is it because you desire not to understand and to rather hold onto your religion because it tells you that you that hardening your heart is right because you deserve your riches because you are “good” and the poor deserve their misery because they are “bad”? Are you going to pretend that just taking care of someone’s spiritual needs is enough, or tell yourself that the poor are poor because they lack faith; that they are not as righteous as you? While this is very religious, it is not Biblical. You will not be judged on your adherence to your religion but your adherence to God’s Word. O generation of vipers, what makes you think that you will be spared God’s Wrath if you do not accept His Word, which is Christ Jesus? We worship political and economic systems and materialism instead of our God. We even have the audacity to support and agree with movie characters that say “Greed is good.” We acknowledge that our system is built on selfishness and coveting, and claim that the poor just simply lack a sufficient amount of selfishness and covetousness. We tell ourselves that if the poor really wanted nice things, they’d do anything to get them. Well, it would appear that the poor are more righteous than the rich. Do you not recall James 2:5-7? “Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?” Of course not, because that scripture is never read in your religious church! All your religious church talks about is sexual immorality and laziness so they can say that all who are sexually immoral and lazy deserve to be poor, and their kids deserve to grow up poor and to be poor too, and their kids and their kids and so on! They don’t preach about how we should go forth and break this cycle in the Name of Jesus Christ to the Glory of God! Because you hear The Word and do not do it, you are like the stupid man that Jesus spoke of who built his house on the sand. Do you not know that you are in danger of the storm coming and washing you and all that you have laid up into the lake of fire? And yes, because you have heard The Word and not done it, you are a SINNER and that is why YOU need a Savior, and why if God held YOU personally responsible for that very sin of not keeping The Word that you have heard, you would either be in the lake of fire right now or on your way to it.
God have mercy on us all, for we all need it. But once we receive God’s mercy, we need to know that we have to give it to others.

Prayer:
Father God in the Name of Jesus Christ, may selfishness, arrogance, and hard – heartedness not be among your people. May your people cast off the false religion and false teaching and instead seek the True Vine, the true instructions from Christ Jesus. May they go forth speaking and showing mercy, grace, and charity to all. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Deliverance:The demons that operate in this area are false religion, false doctrine, false teaching, selfishness, hard – heartedness, hate, coveting, materialism, racism, bigotry, lack of charity, and pride. Please read the Basic Spiritual Warfare guide to learn more about how to go against these demons to help set captives free and win battles in the name of your God through the power, authority, and victory given to you by his Son Jesus Christ and by his blood shed for you!
