Genesis 4:9 – And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
As Believers in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we are first responsible for our own souls. No other man can save us; no other man can stand before the Father in judgment for us; no other man can be transferred our punishment or reward. So are we to be selfish and mind only our own salvation? God forbid! Quite the contrary; please recall that in The Great Commission God commands us to evangelize the lost. Also, even beyond salvation, there is much work to be done. Believers need guidance, instruction, and encouragement in order to help them to avoid temptation, keep their faith, grow in the Holy Spirit, develop their gifts, and be fruitful and multiply and populate the earth with God’s believers who are vessels for God to use to show his great Love and Might through.
Even though salvation is individual and the relationship with the Father through Christ is personal, the Holy Scriptures make it plain that the Kingdom of Heaven is no place for lone wolves! Consider for instance Matthew 18:20, “where there are two or three gathered together in my name there am I also in the midst!” And also consider that the origin of the axiom “two are better than one” comes from the Bible as well. Not only does Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 say that you get a better return on your labor (and think not in the economic sense but in the spiritual one as laborers in the vineyard of God’s Harvest), but it also says “IF ONE FALLS DOWN THE OTHER CAN PICK HIM UP!” So in the paradoxical sense that is common to Christian spirituality, our responsibility is to God alone BUT an integral part of our responsibility to God is being responsible for others. Hence the “Golden Rule” commandment “to love thy neighbor as thyself.” The “as thyself” thing is key here. Do YOU want to go to hell and spend eternal damnation in the lake of fire? Of course not. Do YOU want to go through life not reaching the potential and receiving the blessings that God has in store for you? Of course not. Do YOU want to allow Satan to rob you of love, happiness, peace, health, and prosperity? Of course not! Why? Because you love yourself, and since you love yourself you want good things for yourself and not evil. If you are going to fulfill God’s commandments to love your neighbor AS you love yourself, then you should also want salvation for your brother. You should also want deliverance for your brother. And you should want prosperity for your brother. And who is your brother? Everyone, including your enemies!
So, how does one properly be their brother’s keeper? With love, due care, and caution at the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Do not live in the flesh. Do not trust your own observations and wisdom. And do not accept the counsel of man! God is the judge. God knows best. God knows what people do behind closed doors. God knows the inner – most thoughts of man. God even knows when a man does the right thing with the wrong spirit or motivation, or when a person’s wrong will not be counted against him.
So, we are not to go around being judgmental busybodies. We must remember that not everyone, not even everyone who is saved and faithful, is ready for the sanctified lifestyle. We do not want to offend or harm our brother, or to drive our brother away. We should also be careful to keep the sanctified lifestyle in perspective; not to make a false doctrine of it. Never forget: we are saved by faith and not works, and the sanctified lifestyle is works. As important as works are, they take a clear back seat to faith. It does little good to regulate the behavior of someone who has not accepted Christ and does not believe, and a person who has accepted Christ but has a thorn in the flesh (i.e. an addiction to drugs, violence, or pornography) should be afforded mercy, patience, and love from his brethren, not damnation. Recall the woman caught in the act of adultery that was brought before Jesus Christ. Though she had committed sin, she was not a sinner because she believed in Christ. So Christ would not condemn her. If God will not condemn someone, how can we? The other side of that coin is that we Christians are too quick to confer virtue and righteousness upon those who have the outward appearance of virtue and righteousness (by our superficial worldly corrupt class and culture measures), but such people often not only have not accepted Christ in their lives, but can be inwardly or subversively exceedingly wicked. Jesus Christ condemned such as those who appeared righteous but were not – the religious leaders of his day – often.
Consider the person who is known to hang out in brothels, strip clubs, gay bars, and crack houses. You would immediately condemn such a person as a rank sinner, right? Well, do not be so hasty. It is true that God HAS delivered people from such evil lifestyles. It is equally true, though, that how else is salvation to come to the harlots, the lustful and lascivious, the adulterers, fornicators, and homosexuals, the abusers of their bodily temples, and the violent except they be preached to? And how are such people going to be preached to if they are all in the red – light district and the Believers are all in church? Sure, some Believers do allow their fear of bodily harm or fear of “losing their salvation” prevent them from doing God’s Work where and among whom it is most needed. Of course, those fears are the unfounded result of the lack of faith. If the regular clientele of such places (which include not a few Saturday sinners and Sunday saints I might add) generally do not get injured, then why should a Believer? And sin is not something that you can “catch” or “pick up” like a cold or stain … being around sinners does not make you one. But do not be misled, a major reason why Christians do not go to the sinners is because of the fear of being condemned as a sinner by the righteous. That is not the way to be your brother’s keeper, especially if your brother is someone who is desperately trying to shake their addiction to their old sinful lifestyle but has not quite been able to (just as many church people cannot quite bring themselves to tithe or give up gossip, white lies, and movies and TV shows filled with sinful content), or if your brother is actually out there trying to win souls for Christ.
Sometimes, oftentimes, the way to be your brother’s keeper is to remember and hold fast to Matthew 7:2-5! One of the best ways that we can help our brother is to mind our own behavior. Not only and not so much to avoid hypocrisy, but to be examples of strong Believers for others to emulate. When someone needs help, we are there with a helping hand and a prayer, and furthermore and hand and a prayer that has POWER because of The Truth of the Holy Spirit through Christ Jesus within us. People will be able to see and recognize that there is just a DIFFERENCE between seeking help from us and from others. People should also be able to look at us and see rock solid faithful behavior that does not veer to the right or the left. We are not to be ones who have emotional or psychological problems, or those who follow the crowd, or those who are fearful or neurotic, or those who cannot make up their minds, or those who cannot commit to a decision, or those who cannot follow through and finish a project. We should not be people who are impatient and impulsive, who start out too fast and run out of gas, and we are not to be sluggards either. Indeed, this is particularly important for men. God calls man to be the head of the family as Christ is the church. But that does not mean being some sort of ruler; someone who pushes and slaps his family members around and makes all the decisions right or wrong with no accountability. That is Satan’s way, not God’s way! No, the way to be the head is to be a faithful, reliable SERVANT, one who stands strong for his family and the church by personally consistently standing before GOD ALONE in obedience, righteousness, and prayer just as did the prophet Daniel. When the edict went out that you should only pray to the king of Babylon, Daniel immediately went and prayed to God, and did not relent even when cast into the lion’s den. Through his faithfulness, God delivered not only Daniel but the king of Babylon and the NATION of Babylon through the decree of the king that they should only worship I AM THAT I AM, JEHOVAH! Just as Daniel allowed God to not only deliver himself but the king and the entire nation, by being as Daniel we men can deliver our families; we can be keepers of our wives, children, mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, as well as other members of the church and even those who are now unsaved but by the power of God will be converted by our faithfulness being a vessel through which God’s Love and Power can be made manifest. It is going to happen for God’s Will shall be done, and the only question is whether you will personally allow God to use you to bring it about.
And there are other benefits as well. With our own righteousness, we can petition God for His favor. If God is pleased with our petition and has mercy on us, He will open up the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing so great that you will not have room to receive it (Malachi 3:10). That, my brothers and sisters in Christ, is OVERFLOW. Think about it. If you do not have room to receive all the blessings, where will it go? It will not go to waste, and just dribble into the ocean, be swallowed up by the ground, or fly off into space. God’s Word does not return void! It goes forth seeking to and fro to fulfill the desire of His Master! After all, for what is God’s Word? Jesus Christ! NOTHING that Jesus Christ did on earth was void and came to naught, so why should anything that Jesus Christ does in Heaven? So what will happen is that OTHERS will receive the BLESSINGS of YOUR OVERFLOW! As a result of your own prayers, your own tithes, your own faithfulness, your own charity, your own refusal to complain or gossip or tell lies, your decision not to laugh at or propagate hateful remarks and jokes, your own decision not to put anything else before or trust in anything but God, your own decision to turn off that raunchy TV or skip that R – rated movie that mocks and rejects everything that our Savior taught and stood for, and your own turning the other cheek, others will benefit. Others will be saved. Others will be set free of demon spirits. Others will receive financial breakthroughs. Others will enter the ministry. Others will complete their educations and use it for God. Others will be saved from starvation and disease. Others will be set free from or spared from rape, molestation, and abuse. Others will be freed from the yoke of racism, economic exploitation, and the ravages of war. Others will see their marriages saved. Others will conceive children. Others will have peace and get the victory.
Just by doing what God told you to do, you will be helping countless others, and not just others in your family, on your job, or in your church, but people that you will never meet or know anything about. You will be helping other workers in the vineyard get a good return on their labor. You will be able to pick your brother up when he falls. You will be healing the land. You will be your brother’s keeper. And you will be doing so only in ways which GOD allows possible!
Prayer:Father God in the name of Christ Jesus, please show me how to be my brother’s keeper by being faithful and obedient always to you. Please show me how I can serve others by serving you and love others by loving you so that I may fulfill your commandments. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
